Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Spot-breasted Woodpecker (Colaptes punctigula) and Green-barred Woodpecker (Colaptes melanochloros) in a separate genus Chrysoptilus, the so-called "forest flickers".
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
atricollis (Malherbe, 1850) - Western slope of Peruvian Andes from La Libertad and Ancash south to western Arequipa.
peruvianus (Reichenbach, 1854) - Marañón Valley southern on eastern slope to western Huánuco.
