Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry grassland, dry grassland, rocky areas. From sea-level - 2,700 m.

Afghanistan (B), Armenia (B), Azerbaijan (B), Bahrain (NB) (P), China (mainland), Cyprus, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B), Iraq (P), Israel (B), Jordan (B) (P), Kazakhstan (B), Kuwait (B), Kyrgyzstan (B), Lebanon (B), Oman, Pakistan (B), Qatar, Saudi Arabia (B), Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic (B), Tajikistan (B), Turkey (B), Turkmenistan (B), United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan (B).

Vagrant to Djibouti, Finland, Greece, Italy, Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom, Yemen.

Breeds from west-central Turkey east to Armenia, southern Azerbaijan and western and southern Iran and, east of Caspian Sea, to south-eastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, north-eastern Iran and northern Afghanistan; also isolated populations in Lebanon, northern Israel, southern Syria and northern Iraq. Winters in north-eastern Africa, southern Middle East and northern Arabia east to north-western India.
 
Population
Estimated population is 15,000,000 - 150,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Geographical variation slight; rufous-tinged birds from Asia Minor described as subspecies rufescens and paler ones from eastern Iran and Afghanistan as torquata, but considered insufficiently distinct to merit subspecific separation.
