Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Rufous-tailed Lark (Ammomanes phoenicura), and in the past considered conspecific. Paler and smaller birds from Chad (Ennedi) and Sudan sometimes separated as subspecies pallens, but appear indistinguishable from arenicolor.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cinctura (Gould, 1839)   -  Cape Verde Is (Sío Tiago, Maio, Boavista, Sal).
  • arenicolor (Sundevall, 1850)   -  Sahara Desert from southern and eastern Morocco east to Libya (Cyrenaica) and Egypt (including Sinai Peninsula) and south, discontinuously, to western and south-eastern Mauritania, west-central Mali, CNiger, northern and eastern Chad and central and north-eastern Sudan. Also Middle East (southern Israel, Jordan, Iraq) and Arabian Peninsula.
  • zarudnyi Hartert, 1902   -  Eastern Iran east to southern Afghanistan and southern Pakistan.
