Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-bissau, India (B), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (NB), Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal (B), Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan (B), Rwanda, Saudi Arabia (B), Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Yemen (B), Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Bangladesh, Egypt, Gibraltar, Israel, Italy, Lesotho, Liberia, Oman, Sierra Leone, Thailand, Tunisia.

Unknown to Djibouti, Guinea, Myanmar (B), Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis), and sometimes considered conspecific. Subspecies vindhiana has been considered separate species, but limited differences do not support this.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • vindhiana Franklin, 1831   -  Pakistan, India, and southern Nepal; possibly also Burma.
  • belisarius (Levaillant, J, 1850)   -  Morocco and Algeria; southern Arabia and tropical Africa south to northern Zaire and northern Kenya.
  • rapax (Temminck, 1828)   -  Southern Kenya and southern Zaire south to South Africa and west to Angola and Namibia.
