Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, China (mainland), Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi (B) (NB), Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Djibouti, Sâo Tomé e Principe, Seychelles, Thailand.

Unknown to Afghanistan, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (E).

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • serratus (Sparrman, 1786)   -  Southern Africa.
  • pica (Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1833)   -  Sub-Saharan Africa south to Tanzania and Zambia, and north-western India to Nepal and Myanmar, occasionally southern Tibet, in foothills of Mt Everest.
  • jacobinus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Southern India and Sri Lanka.
