Habitat
Temperate grassland, shrubland, forest. From 250 - 3,000 m.
Oman (B), Saudi Arabia (B), Yemen (B).
Southern Arabia from Jedda (western Saudi Arabia) south to Aden (Yemen) and east to Muscat (Oman). No acceptable record for Eritrea, where data may be based on released birds.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Population from eastern Hadramut, Saudi Arabia, has been separated in different subspecies, quichardi , but not widely accepted.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
melanocephala (Rüppell, 1835) - Arid regions of southern Arabian Peninsula.
guichardi Meinertzhagen, R, 1951 - Eastern Hadhramaut (eastern Yemen).
