Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest.

Kiribati (E) (B), Marshall Islands (B), Micronesia [Federated States of] (B), Nauru (E) (B), Palau (B).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation due to forest clearance for agriculture, hunting for food and especially as a cultural food item, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica), Polynesian Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula aurorae) and perhaps Nukuhiva Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula galeata). Most subspecies based mainly on rather slight differences in size.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • monacha (Momiyama, 1922)   -  Palau Is. Also Yap (western Caroline Is), where possibly introduced.
  • teraokai (Momiyama, 1922)   -  Chuuk (central Caroline Is).
  • townsendi (Wetmore, 1919)   -  Pohnpei (eastern Caroline Is).
  • oceanica (Lesson & Garnot, 1826)   -  Kosrae (eastern Caroline Is).
  • ratakensis (Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1932)   -  Wotje, Ailinglaplap, Arno and Jaluit (Marshall Is).
