Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation due to forest clearance for agriculture, hunting for food and especially as a cultural food item, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica), Polynesian Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula aurorae) and perhaps Nukuhiva Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula galeata). Most subspecies based mainly on rather slight differences in size.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

monacha (Momiyama, 1922) - Palau Is. Also Yap (western Caroline Is), where possibly introduced.
teraokai (Momiyama, 1922) - Chuuk (central Caroline Is).
townsendi (Wetmore, 1919) - Pohnpei (eastern Caroline Is).
oceanica (Lesson & Garnot, 1826) - Kosrae (eastern Caroline Is).
ratakensis (Taka-Tsukasa & Yamashina, 1932) - Wotje, Ailinglaplap, Arno and Jaluit (Marshall Is).
