Habitat
In the breeding season moist oak and rhododendron forest with dense undergrowth and bamboo clumps, mixed forest, scrub and densely vegetated ravines. From 1,800 - 4,250 m.

Himalayas in northern India from Garhwal east through Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and south-eastern Tibet.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Excessive hunting, habitat clearance and degradation due to timber harvesting, fuelwood and fodder collection and livestock grazing are the main threats.
