Habitat
Humid montane forest and edge with abundant bromeliads and mosses. From 1,200 - 3,200 m, occasionally to 300 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (B), Ecuador (B).

Western Andes from south-western Colombia (Patia Canyon, in Nari�o) south to southern Ecuador (southern possibly as far as R Chanchan).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss through deforestation due to intensive logging, human settlement, cattle-grazing, mining and coca and palm cultivation, and possibly illegal international cage-bird trade, are the main threats.

Forms a superspecies with Grey-breasted Mountain-toucan (Andigena hypoglauca) and Hooded Mountain-toucan (Andigena cucullata).
