Habitat
Wooded lowlands, often near water.

Algeria, Andorra (B), Austria (P), Belgium (B), Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte dIvoire, Croatia (Local Name: Hrvatska) (B), France (B), Gambia, Germany (B), Ghana, Gibraltar (B), Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Italy (B) (P), Liberia, Luxembourg (B), Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Netherlands Antilles (B), Nigeria, Portugal (B), Senegal, Sierra Leone, Slovenia (B), Spain (B), Switzerland (B), Togo, Tunisia, United Kingdom (P), Western Sahara.

Vagrant to Central African Republic, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Iceland, Kenya, Kuwait, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Malta, Niger, Norway, Poland, Sweden.

Unknown to Benin (NB).

Breeds France (except northern parts) and Iberia east to southern Belgium, south-western Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and western Croatia, and in north-western Africa. Non-breeding western Africa.
 
Population
Estimated population is 3,000,000 - 10,000,000 (2010).

Food
Insects and their larvae. Fruit in autumn.

Voice
A 'hooeet' call in contact. A harsh 'tchurrrr' in alarm. A varied and musical, sustained song.

Nest
A deep cup of plant fibres, lined with roots, hair and feathers, in the fork of a tree or bush, about 1 - 2 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 5, usually 4; light purplish-pink, sparsely spotted and streaked black.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Sister-species of Icterine Warbler (Hippolais icterina), the two being fairly close to the sister-species pair formed by Upcher's Warbler (Hippolais languida) and Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum).
