Closely related to Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo) and African Golden Oriole (Oriolus auratus). Until recently considered to be conspecific with Indian Golden Oriole (Oriolus kundoo). All form a superspecies, perhaps also including Slender-billed Oriole (Oriolus tenuirostris) and Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis) as members.

Two proposed geographical subspecies, caucasicus (from Gilan, in northern Iran) and sibiricus (from Osnatschennaja, in Krasnoyarsk District of south-central Siberia), considered inseparable from birds in rest of species' range.
