Subspecies
Several records of hybridization with Chorister Robin-Chat (Cossypha dichroa) in eastern South Africa. Hybrids described as Cossypha haagneri. Additional subspecies have been described, but unequivocal diagnosis of these generally problematic, and further complicated by imperfectly understood migratory regimes.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • larischi Meise, 1958   -  Nigeria south to northern Angola.
  • intensa Mearns, 1913   -  South-eastern Central African Republic, southern Sudan, south-western Ethiopia and southern Somalia south to eastern Angola and north-eastern South Africa.
  • natalensis Smith, 1840   -  Eastern South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal south to eastern Cape).
