Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Melaenornis, but majority of authors regard separation as justified, particularly on ecological and behavioural grounds. Forms a species group with African Forest-Flycatcher (Fraseria ocreata). They overlap geographically, but differ significantly in habits and voice.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cinerascens Hartlaub, 1857 - South-western Senegal and Gambia (Gambia and Basse Casamance), Guinea-Bissau (except north-east), western Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast and southern Ghana.
ruthae Dickerman, 1994 - South-western, southern and central Nigeria, southern Cameroon and southern Central African Republic south to northern Angola (Cabinda south-east to Lunda Norte) and central DRCongo (east to upper Uele, Ituri and Kasai).
