Subspecies
Belongs to the "African black-headed group", which also includes Green-headed Oriole (Oriolus chlorocephalus), Sao Tome Oriole (Oriolus crassirostris), Western Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus brachyrynchus), Ethiopian Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus monacha), Mountain Oriole (Oriolus percivali) and Eastern Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus).

Proposed subspecies leucostictus (described from Beni, in north-eastern DRCongo) synonymized with nominate. Boundary between the two subspecies uncertain, but probably R Niger, in Nigeria.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • alleni Verreaux & Verreaux, 1855   -  Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to south-western Nigeria.
  • nigripennis J. Verreaux and é. Verreaux, 1855   -  South-eastern Nigeria and southern Cameroon east to southern Sudan and north-western Uganda, south to north-western Angola. Also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
