Estimated population is 100,000 - 1,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Madagascar Harrier-hawk (Polyboroides radiatus), with which often considered conspecific.

Birds from western Zaire sometimes awarded separate subspecies, prigoginei.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • pectoralis Sharpe, 1903   -  Senegambia east to western Sudan, north to Aïr Mountains (north-western Niger) and south to Zaire.
  • typus Smith, 1829   -  Eastern Sudan to Eritrea and south to Angola and South Africa.
