First Described (Guide)
(Reichenow, 1886)

Habitat
Dry grassy areas, including open savanna, orchard-bush savanna, recently burnt grassland, football fields and lawns. Often near rivers and lakes on open, bare ground, and on migration in cleared areas within forest.

Range (Guide)
Benin (NB), Burundi, Cameroon (B), Central African Republic (B), Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B), Kenya, Nigeria (B), Rwanda, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda.

Vagrant to Ghana, Mauritania, Zambia.

Probably breeds from Togo to north-eastern Zaire, but only definite records from Nigeria. Non-breeding records from eastern Ghana across central and northern Cameroon and southern Chad to most of Zaire (except central-west), LVictoria and north-western Tanzania. Limits of range poorly known.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 25,000 (2010).

Carnivorous. Mostly insects. Also molluscs, worms and small crustaceans.

Nest
A shallow scrape, preferably positioned in recently burnt grassland, and may also be located close to water in grassy or orchard-bush savanna, and sometimes also near buildings.
