Vagrant to Gambia, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait.

Introduced to USA.

Unknown to Afghanistan.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • exustus Temminck, 1825   -  Mauritania and Senegambia east to Sudan.
  • floweri ! Nicoll, 1921   -  Nile Valley in central Egypt (almost certainly extinct).
  • ellioti Bogdanov, 1881   -  South-eastern Sudan east to Eritrea, northern Ethiopia and Somalia.
  • olivascens (Hartert, 1909)   -  Southern Ethiopia, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • erlangeri (Neumann, 1909)   -  Western and southern Arabian Peninsula.
  • hindustan Meinertzhagen, R, 1923   -  South-eastern Iran, Pakistan and most of India.
