First Described (Guide)
(Cassin, 1859)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical swamp forest, heavily degraded former forest, dry savanna, inland wetlands, rural gardens, plantations.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Sudan.

South-eastern Nigeria (Igalaland Plateau); northern Central African Republic (near Ndélé); Gabon, Cabinda (northern Angola), Congo and eastern Zaire (Kinshasa to Bandundu on R Kasai, north to Bangui and east to Bambili on R Uele, east to Banalia on R Aruwimi); and north-eastern Zaire (near Etiga) and south-western Sudan (Bangangai Forest). Formerly also south-central Ghana; recently recorded in Ivory Coast.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been placed in monotypic genus Bombylonax on account of its robust bill and some similarities to Purple-bearded Bee-eater (Meropogon forsteni). However, its biology is now better known, and it appears to be a typical Merops.

No subspecies.
