Subspecies
No close relatives. Forms described as aloysii from Kenya and Uganda and flavior from northern Angola considered synonyms of flavisquamatus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

scolopaceus (Bonaparte, 1850) - Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea east to southern Nigeria.
stellatus (Jardine & Fraser, 1852) - Bioko I (Fernando P�o).
flavisquamatus (Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1855) - Southern Cameroon east to Uganda, south to northern Angola and southern Zaire.
