Subspecies
Has been suggested by some authors as forming a superspecies with Gillett's Lark (Mirafra gilletti), but no data on molecular genetics for either species. Pink-breasted Lark (Calendulauda poecilosterna) is suggested as a third member of same superspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- nigriticola Bates, 1932 - Eastern Mali east to west-central Niger.
- rufa Lynes, 1920 - South-central Chad and western Sudan.
- lynesi Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1933 - Central Sudan.
