Vagrant to Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Hong Kong (China), Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Malta, Netherlands Antilles, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom.

Breeds in eastern Europe (mainly southern Finland, Baltic States, Belarus) east to central Russia (upper R Lena and south-eastern Altai), south to northern Afghanistan. Non-breeding southern and eastern Indian Subcontinent and Myanmar.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Belongs to a probably monophyletic group of small plain-coloured species that also includes Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus), African Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus), and Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris), along with the closely related Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) superspecies (comprising also White-browed Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus tangorum) and Blunt-winged Warbler (Acrocephalus concinens)). Probably closer to Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) than to Eurasian Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus). Hybridization with Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris) in south-eastern Finland.
