Subspecies
Sometimes placed in a superspecies with Red-faced Cisticola (Cisticola erythrops), but ranges overlap considerably.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

swanzii (Sharpe, 1870) - Senegal east to southern Nigeria.
concolor (Heuglin, 1869) - Northern Nigeria east to Sudan.
adamauae Reichenow, 1910 - Cameroon and south-western DRCongo.
belli Ogilvie-Grant, 1908 - Central African Republic, northern DRCongo, Uganda and north-western Tanzania.
cantans (Heuglin, 1869) - Highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
pictipennis Madar�sz, 1904 - Kenya and northern Tanzania.
muenzneri Reichenow, 1916 - Central Tanzania, eastern Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
