Subspecies
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • falkensteini (Cabanis, 1875)   -  South-eastern Senegal east to north-western Ethiopia, and southern Uganda and Tanzania south to Zambezi Valley.
  • omoensis (Neumann, 1904)   -  South-eastern Sudan, south-western Ethiopia, north-eastern Uganda and north-western Kenya.
  • angolensis (Lynes, 1926)   -  South-western DR Congo, western Angola and northern Namibia.
  • galtoni (Strickland, 1853)   -  Eastern Namibia, western Botswana and northern South Africa (northern and western northern Cape).
  • hellmayri (Reichenow, 1902)   -  South-eastern Botswana east to southern Mozambique, and eastern South Africa (Northern Province and northern eastern Cape).
  • actuosa (Clancey, 1966)   -  Eastern South Africa (western KwaZulu-Natal south to Drakensberg Mts) and Lesotho.
  • familiaris (Wilkes, 1817)   -  Southern South Africa (Western Cape and eastern Cape east to R Great Kei).
  • modesta Shelley, 1897   -  North-eastern Angola to Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
