Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • cyanea (Müller, 1776)   -  Senegal east to western Central African Republic, south to north-western Angola and north-western DRCongo (southern approximately to R Congo).
  • nyansae Neumann, 1905   -  Eastern Central African Republic and DRCongo (from lower and middle R Congo) east to southern Sudan, western Kenya, north-western Tanzania islands in L Victoria (Kome, Ukerewe).
  • aethiopica Neumann, 1905   -  Southern Ethiopia and extreme south-eastern Sudan.
