Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi (B) (NB), Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman (B), Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Rufous-vented Paradise-flycatcher (Terpsiphone rufocinerea), the two hybridizing in Gabon and Angola. Also hybridizes with Red-bellied Paradise-flycatcher (Terpsiphone rufiventer).

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • viridis (Müller, 1776)   -  Extreme southern Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia south to Sierra Leone.
  • ferreti (Guérin-Méneville, 1843)   -  Mali and Ivory Coast east to northern Cameroon, southern Chad, northern Central African Republic, Sudan, northern Eritrea and Somalia, south to north-eastern DRCongo, southern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania.
  • harterti (Meinertzhagen, R, 1923)   -  Extreme south-western Saudi Arabia, western and eastern Yemen and southern Oman.
  • speciosa (Cassin, 1859)   -  Southern Cameroon east to south-western Sudan, south to DRCongo and north-eastern Angola.
  • restricta (Salomonsen, 1933)   -  Southern Uganda.
  • kivuensis Salomonsen, 1949   -  South-western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRCongo (Kivu) and north-western Tanzania.
  • suahelica Reichenow, 1898   -  Western Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • ungujaensis (Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1947)   -  Eastern Tanzania, including islands of Zanzibar, Mafia and Pemba.
  • plumbeiceps Reichenow, 1898   -  Breeds Angola and northern Namibia east to south-western Tanzania, Mozambique and northern South Africa. Non-breeding also north to Cameroon, southern DRCongo and south-eastern Kenya.
  • granti (Roberts, 1948)   -  Breeds eastern and southern South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal south to southern western Cape). Non-breeding north to Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
