Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rhipidurus Hartert, 1918 - Eastern Mali (Adrar des Ipras and Homberi), north-western Niger (Aïr Massif and Zinder), Chad (Tibesti and Kapka Mts and elsewhere), north-eastern Central African Republic, highlands of Sudan (including Gebel Elba, on Egyptian border), most of Ethiopia and east to Eritrea, Djibouti and western Somalia, and eastern Uganda and northern and western Kenya.
stanleyi Roselaar, 1993 - Eastern Israel, Palestine and western Jordan, mountains of western and central Arabia (Hejaz and Asir Mts, Tuwaiq escarpment, Gebel Aja and Babel Sama) east into extreme western Oman.
