Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical dry forest and heavily degraded former forest.

Range (Guide)
New Caledonia (B).

New Caledonia and I of Pines.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

A member of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi), Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons), Black-tailed Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea).

Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis). Alternatively, some taxonomists expand present species to include whistlers of Loyalty Is, Banks Is, Vanuatu and Vanikoro (Santa Cruz Is), conventionally regarded as subspecies of Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis).
