Habitat
Mainly woodlands and open forests dominated by eucalypts and having a dense scrub layer. Heathlands and mallee.

Food
Insects and nectar.

Voice
A jarring, descending, 'chung-chung-chung'. A mellow 'chockup, chockup' or 'beer-brick, beer-brick'. Also a rapid, machinegun-like 'chock-chock-chock-chock-chock'.

Nest
Cup-shaped composed of bark and grasses bound with cobweb, lined with fur, hair or other soft materials, placed in a low bush or sapling, usually within 1 - 2 m of the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2, sometimes 3; white lighlty spotted with red at the larger end; oval; about 21 x 15 mm. Incubation: 28 - 32 days; by female only.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fed by both parents.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-throated Honeyeater (Nesoptilotis flavicollis).

Subspecies intergrade where they abut. Nominate subspecies and novaenorciae intergrade along inner slopes of Great Divide from south-eastern Queensland south to south-eastern South Australia.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucotis (Latham, 1801)   -  South-eastern Queensland (about Bunya Mts) south, on and east of Great Divide, to Victoria and south-eastern South Australia.
  • novaenorciae (Milligan, 1904)   -  Southern western Australia (southern from Kalbarri area) east to western edge of Nullarbor Plain, and across coastal and subcoastal mallee to south-eastern South Australia (southern from southern Flinders Ranges), and from eastern Queensland (southern from Burra Range, east of Hughenden) southern through eastern Murray-Darling Basin and western watershed of Great Divide to south-western and south-eastern New South Wales and adjacent Victoria.
  • thomasi (Mathews, 1912)   -  Kangaroo I, in south-eastern South Australia.
