Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl (Bubo nipalensis).

Bornean population sometimes separated as tenuifasciatus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

sumatranus (Raffles, 1822) - Extreme southern Myanmar and peninsular Thailand south to Sumatra, including Bangka I.
strepitans (Temminck, 1823) - Borneo, Java and Bali.
tenuifasciatus Mees, 1964 - Borneo.
