Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Several additional subspecies described: pinosus (Veracruz), ridgwayi (Michoacán) and guerrerensis (south-western Mexico) included in nominate trichopsis; pumilus from Honduras in mesamericanus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
aspersus Brewster, 1888 - South-eastern Arizona to northern Mexico (Sonora and Chihuahua).
trichopsis (Wagler, 1832) - Highlands of central Mexico (from about Durango south to Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas).
