Subspecies
Transferred from the genus Picoides to the genus Veniliornis in accordance with SACC (2007).
Forms a superspecies with Striped Woodpecker (Veniliornis lignarius). They seem to be genetically close and may be conspecific, but possible overlap of breeding ranges not well documented. Subspecies intergrade, and malleator and berlepschi may be more appropriately lumped into nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
cancellatus (Wagler, 1829) - Extreme eastern Bolivia (Huanchaca Mts) to eastern Brazil (western Piauí south to southern Mato Grosso, western Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul), north-eastern Paraguay and western Uruguay.
malleator (Wetmore, 1922) - Chaco region of south-eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina.
berlepschi (Hellmayr, 1915) - Central and eastern Argentina from San Luis and Córdoba south to Neuquén, Río Negro and southern Buenos Aires.
mixtus (Boddaert, 1783) - R Paraná and Buenos Aires (except south).
