Semi-deciduous hillside forests and the adjacent dryer tall caatinga to moist forests, degraded habitats such as degraded forest edge with exotic bamboo and abandoned orchards, urban areas. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Population
Estimated population is 1,000,000 (2010) and decreasing.
Status LC
Habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural expansion, grazing and burning, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Probably related to Tawny Piculet (Picumnus fulvescens) and sometimes regarded as conspecific. Form saturatus, described from Paraíba and previously listed as a subspecies of present species, is now considered a junior synonym of Tawny Piculet (Picumnus fulvescens).
