Breeds eastern North America from central Canada east to Newfoundland and in north-eastern USA (Wisconsin east to New York and Pennsylvania). Non-breeding from southern Canada (southern Ontario) south to Texas and Florida, rarely to north-eastern Mexico.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Northern Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes).

hiemalis Vieillot, 1809 - Breeds eastern North America from central Canada east to Newfoundland and in north-eastern USA (Wisconsin east to New York and Pennsylvania). Non-breeding from southern Canada (southern Ontario) south to Texas and Florida, rarely to north-eastern Mexico.
pullus (Burleigh, 1935) - Breeds in Appalachians (from Virginia and West Virginia south to Georgia). Non-breeding range not known.
