Subspecies
Several recently discovered populations represented by extremely few, if any, specimens. Thus, racial identity of those on Yapen I and others in Wandammen Mts, Bomberai Peninsula (Fakfak Mts, Kumawa Mts) and Gauttier Mts (near western part of northern coast) undetermined.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
gilliardi (Greenway, 1966) - Batanta I, in north-western New Guinea.
castanonota (Salvadori, 1875) - Vogelkop (Tamrau Mts, Arfak Mts), in north-western New Guinea.
saturata (Rothschild & Hartert, 1911) - Nassau Mts, in west-central New Guinea.
uropygialis (Rand, 1940) - Northern slopes of Oranje Mts and central North Coastal Range (Torricelli Mts), in west-central and northern New Guinea.
buergersi (Mayr, 1931) - North-eastern New Guinea (Sepik Mts, Adelbert Mts, probably also western Finisterre Mts).
par (Meise, 1930) - Saruwaged Mts, in Huon Peninsula (north-eastern New Guinea).
pulchra (Sharpe, 1882) - Mountains of south-eastern New Guinea (from Herzog Mts and Mt Karimui east to eastern Owen Stanley Range).
