Birds from northern Namibia and northern Botswana were separated as subspecies chobiensis, those of northern Zimbabwe and Mozambique as usheri, and those of western Namibia as elizabethae.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
ansorgei (Benson, 1947) - South-western Angola.
bicinctus Temminck, 1815 - Namibia, Botswana, north-western Cape Province (South Africa).
multicolor Hartert, 1908 - Southern and eastern Zambia, southern Malawi and western Mozambique, south to Transvaal.
