Subspecies
No subspecies.

Following recent analysis of mitochondrial DNA, has been proposed that this species, along with White-rumped Seedeater (Crithagra leucopygia), Yellow-fronted Canary (Crithagra mozambica) and White-bellied Canary (Crithagra dorsostriata), be placed in a separate genus, Ochrospiza, only distantly related to other African members of present genus. A detailed consideration of all taxa in current genus is required, however, before full revision can be made. Further, this species sometimes thought to be a hybrid between Black-throated Canary (Crithagra atrogularis) and Yellow-fronted Canary (Crithagra mozambica).
