Habitat
Dry savanna.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Kenya.

Central Kenya (old record); southern and eastern DRCongo, north, central and south-eastern Angola, Tanzania (except north-east), Zambia, Malawi, north-western and southern Mozambique, Botswana (Chobe), north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi), northern and south-eastern Zimbabwe and locally in northern South Africa.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Formerly considered conspecific with Eastern Paradise-Whydah (Vidua paradisaea), Sahel Paradise-whydah (Vidua orientalis), Exclamatory Paradise-whydah (Vidua interjecta) and Togo Paradise-whydah (Vidua togoensis), and all sometimes placed in a separate genus Steganura. However, molecular-genetic data indicate that present species and Eastern Paradise-Whydah (Vidua paradisaea) are sister-species, using different host species and differing in song.
