Subspecies
Thought to form a superspecies with Abyssinian Crimsonwing (Cryptospiza salvadorii).
Proposed subspecies homogenes, described from eastern Zimbabwe (Stapleford Forest Reserve, in Umtali district), treated as a synonym of australis.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
reichenovii (Hartlaub, 1874) - South-eastern Nigeria (Obudu Plateau), western Cameroon, Bioko I (Fernando Póo) and north-western Angola (Gabela region).
ocularis Sharpe, 1902 - Mountains of Albertine Rift in eastern DRCongo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
australis Shelley, 1896 - Mountains in Tanzania, eastern Zambia, Malawi, western Mozambique and eastern Zimbabwe.
