Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status LC
Wetland habitat destruction is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

castaneigula (Cabanis, 1884) - Western Zambia, north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi region), northern Botswana and extreme western Zimbabwe.
xanthopterus (Finsch & Hartlaub, 1870) - South-western Tanzania, Malawi, northern and central Mozambique and extreme north-eastern Zimbabwe.
marleyi (Roberts, 1929) - Southern Mozambique (south of R Save) and coastal north-eastern South Africa.
