Subspecies
Formerly thought to form a superspecies with Holub's Golden-Weaver (Ploceus xanthops), but the two differ in breeding behaviour and ecology, and ranges overlap.
Proposed subspecies tongensis (described from southern Mozambique) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aureoflavus Smith, A, 1839 - South-eastern Kenya (southern from R Tana), coastal Tanzania (including Pemba I and Zanzibar), eastern Malawi and northern Mozambique.
subaureus Smith, 1839 - Central and southern Mozambique southern along coast to extreme eastern Swaziland and south-eastern South Africa.
