Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Forms a superspecies with C. tsavoensis, and the two are sometimes treated as conspecific.
Proposed subspecies strophium, described from Manhií§a (Sul do Save), in Mozambique, considered indistinguishable from microrhynchus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bifasciatus (Shaw, 1812) - South-western Central African Republic and Gabon south, discontinuously, to western Angola (Cabinda south to Benguela, also Namibe and central Huíla).
microrhynchus Shelley, 1876 - Eastern DRCongo, Uganda and Kenya south to extreme eastern Angola (north-eastern Moxico), north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi), extreme northern Botswana, eastern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and eastern South Africa; Zanzibar and Mafia I, off Tanzania.
