Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Nectarinia. Birds from Mt Elgon, on Kenya-Uganda border, described as subspecies alinderi, but considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

lathburyi (Williams, JG, 1956) - Northern Kenya.
reichenowi (Fischer, 1884) - Western and southern Uganda east to western and central Kenya, and northern Tanzania.
shellyae (Prigogine, 1952) - Eastern DRCongo.
