Subspecies
Often placed in genus Mirafra, but distinctive in terms of structure, plumage (including sexual dimorphism) and migratory behaviour. Forms a superspecies with Rufous-rumped Lark (Pinarocorys erythropygia), and sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
occidentis Clancey, 1968 - Breeds south-western DRCongo and northern Angola; migrates southern as far as Namibia and Mozambique.
nigricans (Sundevall, 1850) - Breeds south-eastern DRCongo, south-western Tanzania and north-western Zambia; migrates southern as far as Namibia and Mozambique.
