Boulder-strewn, grassy hillsides and bases of small hills.

A rich, liquid, melodious song, much more varied than that of Cape Grass-Warbler (Sphenoeacus afer).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- pycnopygius (Sclater, 1852) - Coastal south-western Angola and northern and central Namibia.
- spadix Clancey, 1972 - HuĂla and Namibe escarpment (south-western Angola).
