Habitat
Tall, wet, luxuriant forest. Generally below 1,600 m but up to 2,000 m.
Kenya (E) (B) (NB), Malawi (B) (NB), Mozambique (B) (NB), Tanzania [United Republic of] (B) (NB).
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearance for small-scale agriculture and logging is the main threat.

Voice

Subspecies
Exhibits some affinities to Black-throated Apalis (Apalis jacksoni ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
chariessa Reichenow, 1879 - Lower R Tana, in eastern Kenya.
macphersoni Vincent, 1934 - Highland forests in central and southern Tanzania, southern Malawi and adjacent northern Mozambique (Mt Chiperoni).
