Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, dry forest and savanna. From 700 - 1,700 m, occasionally 720 - 1,900 m.

Range (Guide)

Malawi (B), Mozambique (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Brown-chested Alethe (Chamaetylas poliocephala), Red-throated Alethe (Chamaetylas poliophrys) and White-chested Alethe (Chamaetylas fuelleborni).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

choloensis (Sclater, 1927) - Southern Malawi and adjacent Mozambique (Mt Chiperone).
namuli (Vincent, 1933) - Mt Namuli, in north-central Mozambique.

Similar Species
White-chested Alethe (Chamaetylas fuelleborni) which lacks white tail-spots and does not occur near this species.
