Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • vivax Neave, 1909   -  Western Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, north-western Tanzania, south-eastern DRCongo (Shaba) and adjacent northern and western Zambia.
  • bivittatus Reichenow, 1879   -  South-central and south-eastern Kenya, southern Somalia and to eastern Tanzania, including Zanzibar I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Crested-flycatcher (Trochocercus bivittatus).
  • megalolophus Swynnerton, 1907   -  Malawi and northern Mozambique south to eastern Zimbabwe and north-eastern South Africa (eastern KwaZulu-Natal).
  • segregus Clancey, 1975   -  North-eastern South Africa (eastern northern Province south to western KwaZulu-Natal).
  • cyanomelas (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Coastal southern and south-eastern South Africa.
