Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Trochocercus, but recent evidence indicates closer relationship with present genus. Forms a superspecies with Dusky Crested-flycatcher (Elminia nigromitrata) and White-bellied Crested-flycatcher (Elminia albiventris).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
albonotata Sharpe, 1891 - Mt Elgon east to central Kenya, and western Uganda south through Rift Valley to eastern DRCongo and south-western Tanzania.
subcaerulea (Grote, 1923) - South-eastern Kenya, east, central and southern Tanzania, southern Malawi and northern Mozambique.
swynnertoni (Neumann, 1908) - Eastern Zimbabwe (Nyanga to Mt Selinda) and Mozambique (R Pungwe south to about Espungabera and east to Mt Gorongosa).
