Subspecies
Genus formerly included with the helmet-shrikes (Prionopidae), which were at the time treated as a subfamily of Malaconotidae. However, recent studies suggest that it belongs with Laniidae. Forms a superspecies with Northern White-crowned Shrike (Eurocephalus ruppelli).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • anguitimens Smith, 1836   -  South-western and southern Angola and northern and north-eastern Namibia east to Botswana (except south-west), extreme southern Zambia, central plateau of Zimbabwe, and northern South Africa (western Limpopo Province).
  • niveus Clancey, 1965   -  South-eastern Zimbabwe and adjacent SW Mozambique south to north-eastern South Africa (eastern Limpopo south to extreme N KwaZulu-Natal) and north-eastern Swaziland.
