Habitat
Dry, open, treeless or sparsely wooded areas, pastures, Accacia spp. short grass savanna, open patches in bushveld or thornbush, mopane Colophospermum spp. shrublands, cultivated land, fallow fields and artificial grasslands. Occasionally observed on sand-dunes.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Lesotho.

Population
Estimated population is 420,000 - 1,100,000 (2010).

Nest
A scrape or depression in the ground placed amongst newly sprouted grass on recently burnt grasslands, often close to trees that provide shade. Semi-colonially.

Subspecies
Birds from south-western Angola, Namibia, Botswana, western Zimbabwe and western Transvaal may be separated as third subspecies xerophilus, but doubtfully distinct.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • coronatus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Ethiopia to South Africa; marginal in south-western Somalia.
  • demissus (Friedmann, 1928)   -  Somalia.
  • xerophilus Clancey, 1960   -  South-western Angola to western South Africa and western Zimbabwe.
